TNO report /V6516/03 / 10/01/2007

The following is an assesment by TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek) to assess the marine (and fresh water) aquatic ecotoxicity, the biodegradability, and the bioaccumulation potential (i.e. partition coefficients) of the cleaning product Aquaquick 2000.
These data are required by the Dutch State Supervision of the Mines (SSM) and other relevant national authorities in connection with an application for use of this product in the North Sea off-shore industry.
Aquaquick 2000 is a water soluble mixture of synthetic non-ionic and anionic detergents and a number of secondary substances based on natural products (among others an organic acid). It is traded either as a concentrated product or dilutions in water. The latter is usually applied for cleaning purposes. The pH value of the concentrated product has been adjusted to pH 5 by addition of 1% sodium carbonate. The marine toxicity of the complete product was tested with the methods prescribed by the Oslo and Paris Commission OSPAR), i.e. an 72 h growth inhibition test with the marine alga Skeletanema castatum according to the International Standard ISO 10253, and an acute 48 h test with the marine copepod species Acartia tansa according to a draft ISO International Standard (presently ISO 14669).
The biodegradability was assessed for each component separately, as well as in a screening 28 closed bottle biodegradability test with the complete product in natural seawater according to the OECD Guideline 306. The partition coefficient (log Pow) of each component was estimated separately and was detennined by HPLC according to the OECD Guideline 117.
The assessment of the effects bn fresh water organisms and the biodegradability according to relevant OECD Guidelines was based on a general comparison of marine and fresh water methods.
The lowest effect value was an ErC50 (72 h) = 6.2 mg.rl with the marine algae and the concentrated product. This value was further used for calculation the effect values for the dilutions relevant for the labelling of these products.
Arguments have been supplied in the full report to the extent that the effect values found with marine organisms will also be representative for fresh water algae and the fresh water crustacean Daphnia magna.
The biodegradability of the concentrated product in natural seawater was found to be 65% within 28 days. The organic components of Aquaquick 2000 have been shown to be readily biodegradable in several fresh water OEeD tests under varying conditions (i.e. > 60% degradation within 28 days).
By the HPLC method five main components were found. Four of them had log Pow values between 4.0 and 5.1, and one component had a logPow value of 0.9. These logPow values are consistent with the known composition of Aquaquick 2000. TNO report I V6516/03 I 18/01/2007
Considering the lowest toxicity test results obtained, the following product classification can be given according to the EU directive 99/45/EC (dangerous preparation directive): 3/14
The detergents also fulfil the criteria for ready biodegradability of the detergent regulation (EC) No 648/2004.
Aquaquick 2000 (diluted 1:20) : Not harmful to aquatic organisms.
Aquaquick 2000 (diluted 1:50) : Not harmful to aquatic organisms.
